While most snakes need to be probed by a veterinarian in order to determine gender, Dumeril’s boas can be sexed visually. If you look at the base of the tail (near the vent), the boa may or may not have a couple of claws. If it has easily visible claws, then the snake is male. If you can’t see them easily or can’t see them at all, then the snake is female. These claws (aka “spurs”) are remnants from millions of years ago when snake ancestors had legs and feet.
